National Conference on Education Emergency

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has announced an "Education Emergency" across Pakistan to enroll approximately 26 million children who are currently out of school, aiming to transform Pakistan into one of the most educated countries in the world. The Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to addressing this critical challenge during a National Conference on Education Emergency held in Islamabad.

During his address to a gathering of federal ministers, parliamentarians, vice-chancellors, diplomats, and development partners, Prime Minister Sharif declared that he would oversee the program personally and coordinate with all provincial chief ministers to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative.

The Prime Minister outlined his plan to enroll the large number of out-of-school children and shared his track record of success in the education sector during his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab. He noted that he had previously managed to enroll 90,000 children from brick kilns into schools and had handed over 10,000 schools to the Punjab Daanish Authority, which provides free, high-quality education and boarding for underprivileged children.

The Punjab Education Endowment Fund was another key project that provided scholarships to hundreds of thousands of deserving students based on merit. However, the Prime Minister acknowledged that enrolling 26 million out-of-school children and addressing the issue of stunted growth are major challenges requiring significant financial resources.

Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui emphasized the severity of the problem, pointing out that the number of out-of-school children in Pakistan exceeds the population of 150 countries around the world.

The conference also featured speakers from international organizations and development agencies, including representatives from UNICEF, the British High Commission, the World Food Program, and the World Bank, as well as Pakistan's renowned mountaineer Naila Kiani. These speakers highlighted the importance of education and shared their support for the Prime Minister's ambitious plan to address the education crisis in Pakistan.
